The most numerous type of Stanier tender was the 4000 gallon nine ton model, initially built with snaphead rivets, later with fully welded tanks and finally with part-riveted / part-welded tanks. The design represented a considerable advance over the earlier LMS Fowler standard tender and featured high curved in sides and greatly improved layout.

The 4000 gallon tenders were paired with several LMS classes:  Black 5  4-6-0, 5XP Jubilee 4-6-0, 8F 2-8-0, Royal Scot 4-6-0  (and rebuilt Patriots/Jubilees), Princess 4-6-2 (in 1935/6)

Other than the design change from riveted to welded tanks, there were few details changes over the life of the tenders. The pattern of axlebox cover plate changed from plain to cross ribbed after the first batches of riveted tenders, and 20 of the part-welded examples had roller bearing axles.. However the main visual difference was on the tenders attached to the Royal Scots which had a higher front footplate to match the height of the locomotive cab floor.
